What is a NEW MOON? Why is it in a specific sign? How can we use its influence to support our life’s spiritual evolution?
WHAT IS ASTROLOGY?
Astrology is the study (-logy) of the stars and planets (astro) at one’s time of birth and on any specific day. The science of astrology dates back millennia and was predominant in all ancient civilizations around the world. Astrology was used to assess current events, calculate births and marriages, coronations and other political rituals, predict periods of agricultural, economic, and socio-political prosperity or restrictions, and design architecture.
While Western astrology uses the language of Greco-Roman deities, such as Jupiter, Mars, Venus, its origins precede these cultures and travels back in time and space to the Sumerians, Babylonians, Egyptians and other nomadic cultures of Northern Africa and the middle-east.

WHAT IS A NEW MOON?
In astrology, we refer to a new moon is when the Sun and the Moon in the current sky are conjunct, meaning that they are in the same location in space from a geocentric point of view (geo= earth; centric= from the center/point of view). The moon’s location in relation to the Sun is what makes the moon shine with reflective light. When the two look close together, the Moon is dark because the sun behind the satellite won’t shine on her surface. When the two are opposite each other, again from a point of view on earth, we have a full moon.
WHAT DOES A NEW MOON IN CANCER MEAN?
On July 20, 2020, the moon will travel through the constellation of Cancer, and will meet the sun at 28°26’ at 12:32pm CST. When looking up at the sky, we will see the sun and can image the moon standing near it. The effects of this aspect, called a conjunction, are: new beginnings, new possibilities, setting an intention, letting go of what is no longer necessary, rest, receiving intuitive guidance, and acceptance. In Cancer, the new moon refers to our need for nurturance, self-care, self-love, connection with “home” and “family” and the principle of motherhood. We are invited to “mother” ourselves, to truly get in touch with our higher self and align.
Together NEW MOON + CANCER invite us to set new intentions for self-care, commit to love one’s self, rest, align with what is truly nurturing, surrender and forgive.
